Akagera National Park, nestled in the northeast of Rwanda along the scenic border with Tanzania, is a true gem of East African wilderness. Established in 1934, the park was once among the largest protected areas in Rwanda, covering over 2,500 sq km. However, in 1997, part of the land was repurposed for resettlement and agriculture, reducing the park to its current size of 1,122 sq km.
Thanks to a transformative partnership with African Parks since 2010, Akagera has experienced a remarkable revival. Today, it boasts thriving wildlife populations, including the Big Five, diverse bird species, and stunning savannah landscapes, making it one of Rwanda’s most celebrated conservation success stories and an unmissable destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
Akagera National Park perfectly complements visits to Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Parks, creating a well-rounded Rwandan safari experience. It offers a stunning variety of large plains game, including elephants, buffaloes, zebras, topis, waterbucks, roan antelopes, and elands. The park is also known for its papyrus swamps, which are home to rare and unique species like the elusive Sitatunga antelope and the highly sought-after Shoebill Stork.
Smaller antelope species such as duikers, oribis, bushbucks, bohor reedbucks, klipspringers, and impalas add to the diversity. Visitors can also spot several primates, including olive baboons, vervet monkeys, and the shy blue monkey during the day, while night drives often reveal the presence of bush babies. This rich biodiversity makes Akagera a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike.
Akagera National Park is a bird lover’s paradise, home to over 500 bird species, including rare and spectacular sightings that attract birdwatchers from around the globe. What makes the park even more exceptional is that it proudly hosts Africa’s iconic Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo—offering visitors a truly unforgettable safari experience. With its breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and rich birdlife, Akagera stands out as one of Rwanda’s most thrilling and rewarding destinations for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike.
